Print Production - Final Digipak & Advert

This is my final Digipak;

This is my final Advert;

Print Production - Planning - Final Idea

After putting both of my digipak drafts on Facebook, and finding which they preferred, i am going to take into account all of the critisism and ideas that was brought up.

As my target audience liked the fact that it was eyecatching due to the yellow and black colouring, i want to keep this colour scheme as it is quite simple yet stands out. Overall i got really good feedback and there wasn't many new suggestions of how to change it, however, it was said that there is maybe a little too much block colours, so i will make the blocks of black colouring smaller. It was also suggested that i add a little something to the CD holder to make that a little more attractive, so i will increase the size of the writing, and add the bands logo to keep the simplistic style, which would also increase the brand awareness of the band and its logo.

Print Production - Planning - Photo-shoot & Editing

Originally i had planned to use the band, who has given us permission to use their song for our music video, in our printwork. However as they live in Birmingham, it is hard to arrange a time before Christmas to meet up with them and take the photos for our print work. After finding this out, i asked a friend of mine; Brett Roberts, to help me out and let me take pictures of him to use in my print work. Luckily he agreed to it.

These are the best images;

At first i was hesitant as the fact that Brett is not in the band would be blatently obvious when making the music video, so i thought of doing silhouettes, i thought it would make a nice effect to the iamge and would make them stand out and become bolder, this will be edited on photoshop.

Here are a few of those pictures edited to silhouettes, and these are the images that will be used for my print work;

I want to make my own Record Company Logo so I have created one on www.logomaker.com, this is a free software which enables anyone to create their own and unique company logos. This is my logo;

Print Production - Planning - First Drafts

After picking the few best ideas from my brainstorming task, i began to think of ideas of how i might like my digipak to look. So i printed out some digipak templates and then drew on some of the rough ideas that i had. Overall i came up with two which use slightly similar images and colour styles as well as layouts.

Draft 1:

Draft 2:

As you can see these are just rough sketches of my ideas, this was to get just a breif sense of how it would look, after drawing these sketches and coming up with ideas, i made a more detailed draft using photoshop and the ideas that i have had to create more appealing drafts in order to gain accurate audience research.

This is a more detailed version of draft 1:

This is a more detailed version of draft 2:

As you can see, both of my drafts fit in with all of the ideas that i wanted to use to begin with and i think that it is important that i fill them with as many of those as i can.

Audience Research;
After making a more detailed version of the two drafts, i put both of them on facebook and asked people who are in my target audience what they thought of them and which they prefered. This is important as it will help me create my final idea and it will also allow me to find out if it is suitable for my target audience or not.

Here is the feedback i got for draft 1;

Here is the feedback i got for draft 2;

After getting better feedback on draft 1, i am going to use this as my main and final idea as it is the one that appeals mostly to my target audience.
As i am using this draft, i will take under and consider all of the comments that have been made about it and will change it accordingly for my final draft.

As well as this, to create a professional look, i want to use the same themes, colours, types of images, effects and layouts for my album advert.

Print Production - Planning - Best Ideas

After looking through my brainstorm and also doing research based on digipaks and advertisements, These are the ideas in which I think will suit the band and also the music style the best and these are what I want to feature in my digipak and advert;
- 6 sided digipak - This would give me more creative freedom and opportunities whilst doing my digipak, and I think it would be a better way of protecting the CD inside the digipak.
- Band - I want to feature the band in my digipak and advert as I think it is vital that people can reference them to the music video itself. Not only this but a lot of the digipaks that I looked at for research lean towards this idea. If I am to feature
the band I want to show them posing together traditionally like a band with some instruments involved. I also want to use the bands logo throughout as it would be the main thing to increase brand awareness. I also want to show them dressed similarly which would lean toward a more traditional indie bands image, like Kings Of Leon and Green Day.
- Photo-shop - After looking at Paolo Nutini's digipak for "These Streets" I love the way that they have used his silhouette as the main image for him and I want to use this style and effect within my digipak and advert. This effect would be done in photo shop and I want to do so but also using the band colours to keep a persistent theme throughout. Similar to these images below;

Print Production - Planning - Brainstorming

After researching into advertising campaigns and digipaks, I have thought of a few ideas and things to feature in mine. I thought the easiest way to plan all of this would be to do a brainstorm to work out all of my ideas and find out which was the best.

Both of the digipaks that I have seen have both been four sided, however I have though about using a six sided digipak, to allow me to have more creative freedom when it comes to producing my digipak.
I have also thought that my digipak and advert could represent the music video that I will make after Christmas, meaning that i would be showing; "chavs", "Smart chavs", the band and also the food fight, this could be shown through the fonts and the images of the digipak.
I could also show just the band posing together, dressed similarly and also feature the logo, I think this is the most traditional idea of a digipak and advert.
I could also go along the lines of creating an entropic and abstract digipak as i could link it to either the band name "The Filthy Habits" or I could go along the lines of the song title "ASBO Green" for example, images of a field, chavs and things like that.
I could also use a collage type digipak similar to "The Police". I would feature the bands logo which would represent the bands colours, i could also use images of the band that I have edited on photo shop.
I know for definite that I want to use the colours yellow and black, as these are the colours of the bands logo, I could show images of the band wearing these colours, or perhaps using a set design and layout featuring mostly this colour as I think it would increase brand awareness for the band and the digipak itself.

Technology

For this week, I am going to set myself three targets to complete, to help develop my technology skills.
1) I want to experiment with photo shop and I want to learn how all of the tools work, and what they do, secondly I want to experiment with the different filters, this would help with my print work and advert look more professional.
2) I want to learn how to use the lighting equipment, as I have never used it before, and this would help with the music video task.
3) I want to experiment with some of the effects that will be used within my music video - zooming in and out, focus pulls and tracking shots, with practise this would make my music video more professional and unique.

Creativity

What is creativity?
Creativity is original ideas with a value, similar to intelligence it is multi-sensory.

Creativity doesn't come from anywhere, if it is forced it can actually be uncreative and can seem bland. People can be more creative by engaging their senses, for example; some people go for walks, listen to music or read a book to gain new ideas.
However most people are scared to be wrong so they limit themselves to the originality of their ideas, and unfortunately researches have found that people grow out of creativity as they get older in life.

Pitch Feedback

I was really happy with the feedback that I received after presenting my pitch. I felt that the comments really helped me to realise that my ideas are creative and different to those of a conventional music video. Some of the replies were just put at "Awesome" and some others mentioned how the talking chins idea was completely different, unique and will add comedy and humour which put my mind at rest because I felt as though using the idea of a talking chin to match to the lyrics was a huge risk and thought that many people and audiences wouldn't really appreciate the idea.

Also on the logistical side feedback was great as people had managed to realise that we were a well organised group and that we had taken in to consideration that the band were from Birmingham and that transport may be an issue. We addressed this problem by regular staying in contact with the band and also arranging times, dates and also who is going to drive up and down from A to B. Target audience was not a problem either as we did a good description of who we thought would listen to the bands music. We also talked about the jicnar and pyscographic scale and why we thought are target audience would fit this specific window and what makes them the way they are.

However because we have said that some of the lyrics in our song remind us of lower class citizens and maybe those who are D on the jicnar scale, people who hang around on street corners and causing trouble (chavs) they got confused that we were stuck between choosing either indie or chavs as our main audience which was not the case. We didn't really understand why people wrote that our target audience was suitable for the indie genre and then they wrote chavs and indie do not mix, when we clearly said in the pitch and wrote on the presentation that a certain few lyrics reminded us of maybe something a chav would day.

Furthermore i was really happy that people liked the song and that they said they thought it would be an excitable project to make and maybe to expand. I would really like to make sure they we take risks on this music video and maybe film any ideas that me and Tasmin have in the future. I am looking to make a completely unique and disjunctive music video and i think by adding loads of different ideas such as talking chin and food fights in to the swing it will make the video stand out and make it completely different to those of others. However I do know that adding to many ideas to the video may over power and be to much in our audiences faces so it is important that we do not go over board.

Overall I am happy with the constructive criticism and positivity that I had received for my pitch and felt like I was a complete success on my groups half.
